What is BCAA?

The Branched-Chain Amino Acids (BCAAs) are L-Leucine, L-Isoleucine and L-Valine.  BCAAs are used by the body to promote healing of injured tissues, speed up recovery, and protect against muscle tissue breakdown (catabolism) during exercise.

Studies have shown BCAA to be beneficial due to the characteristics of its individual components as well.  For example, Leucine helps in wound recovery and plays an important role in muscle protein synthesis, Valine helps promote or maintain nitrogen balance (essential for muscular development), and Isoleucine helps boost energy, induces glucose uptake into cells and is necessary for forming hemoglobin.

‘Branched chain’ refers to a chemical structure setting them apart from other amino acids.  Branched-Chain Amino Acids are considered essential, because human beings cannot survive without their inclusion in their diet, so it is important to ingest BCAA’s on a daily basis.

For people with low dietary protein intake, BCAA supplementation can promote muscle protein synthesis and increase muscle growth over time.  Supplementation can also be used to prevent fatigue in novice athletes.

Supplementing BCAAs prevents a serum decline in BCAAs, which occurs during exercise or excessive work.  A serum decline would normally cause a tryptophan influx into the brain, followed by serotonin production, which causes fatigue.

BCAA 2:1:1 ratio is made up of 2 parts Leucine, 1 part Isoleucine and 1 part Valine.  This 2:1:1 ratio is the only one of the BCAA’s which has received studies that show this ratio works in recovery.

Before taking BCAA’s:

You should not use BCAA’s if you have ever had an allergic reaction to a BCAA supplement.

Avoid taking BCAA 4 hours before going to sleep.  If your sleep is disrupted, discontinue use.
