What is Alpha-GPC?

Alpha-GPC (A-GPC) is a natural choline compound found in the brain.  A-GPC is a choline-containing phospholipid.  When ingested, A-GPC is rapidly absorbed and easily crosses the blood-brain barrier.  It is metabolized into Choline and Glycerol-1-Phosphate.  Choline is a precursor of Acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter involved in memory, attention, and skeletal muscle contraction.  Glycerol-1-Phosphate is used to support cellular membranes.

Alpha-GPC is a chemical released when a fatty acid found in plants breaks down.  In some countries A-GPC is used as medicine.

In Europe, A-GPC is a prescription medication for the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease.  In the United States A-GPC is only available as a dietary supplement, mostly in products promoted to improve memory.

Alpha-GPC is also known by many names.  Here are some of them:

Please don’t confuse Alpha-GPC with choline, lecithin, or phosphatidylcholine.  These are not the same.

What is Alpha-GPC 50%?  A-GPC is made up of 50% Alpha Glyceryl Phosphoryl Choline, 48% Dicalcium Phosphate Dihydrate and 2% Silicon Dioxide.

Athletes may benefit from A-GPC supplementation.  Preliminary evidence suggests that A-GPC increases vertical jump power.  In one study, both caffeine and A-GPC improved vertical jump power, with the greatest improvement in participants who took a 200 mg dose of A-GPC.

A pilot study reported that A-GPC increased peak bench press force, but not peak power or rate of force development.  In another study done in trained cyclists, A-GPC improved peak power and time to fatigue when used with L-Citrulline.

Suggested Use:

Adult – Mix 600mg to 1200mg (1/2  tsp) once a day in water, juice, pre-workout or as directed.
